Does OSHA require handwashing stations on a job site?
On construction sites, yes, in defined circumstances. OSHA 1926.51(f)(1) requires washing facilities where employees apply paints, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or work in other operations where contaminants may be harmful. That is a narrower trigger than the toilet rule, but it catches a lot of real work: painting crews, coating applicators, landscape and pest treatment crews, and anyone handling material the safety data sheet flags as harmful on skin contact. How many handwashing stations do I need?
No single number fits every site, because the count follows crew size, shift length and how dirty the work is. The benchmark most planners start from is ANSI/PSAI Z4.3, which calls for one unit per ten workers over a forty hour work week with one service visit in that period. Do food vendors and events need handwashing stations?
Temporary food service is regulated separately from construction, and the requirement usually arrives through the health permit rather than through OSHA.
